Thirty yards from a residential dock on Lake Norman, near Hearthstone Court in the community of Terrell, a kayak floated overturned in the water. It was just before seven in the evening on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in Catawba County, North Carolina.

Lake Norman is a man-made reservoir covering more than 32,000 acres of freshwater, northwest of Charlotte. Dorian Jackson, 21, of Greensboro, North Carolina, and his younger sister had taken their kayaks out on the water near Terrell that Saturday evening.

Her kayak capsized about thirty yards from the dock of a nearby home, pitching her into the water. She was wearing a life jacket but was struggling in the water.

Jackson was a senior at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a historically Black university in Greensboro, and a third-generation Aggie. He was a Cheatham-White Scholar and a leader in the Honors College and Student Government Association.

He had graduated from James B. Dudley High School in Greensboro in 2023 and had joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at NC A&T. Before his final semester, he had accepted a full-time position at Wells Fargo in Charlotte, set to begin after he finished his degree.

Elon Is Not Showing this Publicly, But I Saw It

Elon Musk recently shared a private video of his new product with a Silicon Valley insider called Jason Calacanis…

The venture capitalist who turned $100,000 into $100 million when Uber went public.

And Jason was stunned. He said:

"I've seen [Elon's new product], he's making sick progress. He's not showing it publicly…but wow… I think it will be the best selling product of all time."

I couldn't agree more.

I believe you'll want to buy one for yourself as soon as it's available.

We have so much to look forward to.

He was not wearing a life jacket out on the water that evening. His family would later release a public statement: "Dorian is a strong and capable swimmer, and we want that fact to be clearly understood as people speak about the circumstances surrounding the accident."

Jackson paddled to where his sister was struggling beside the overturned kayak, thirty yards from the dock. He tried to pull her up from the water and onto his own boat.

Neighbors along Hearthstone Court saw what was happening and went into the water. They reached his sister and brought her safely to shore, but Jackson went under during the effort and did not come back up.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission was called to the scene around seven that evening, and officers launched a search across the section of the lake near Hearthstone Court in Terrell. Crews from multiple agencies worked through the night, and Jackson's body was recovered from the water the following day.

His sister survived, pulled from the water by the neighbors who had gone in after her, her life jacket still on. Jackson had never put one on.

NC A&T confirmed that Dorian Jackson died while saving his sister from drowning during a kayaking trip at Lake Norman. He was months from completing his degree, with a career at Wells Fargo in Charlotte he would never begin.

His family described his death in a public statement as the result of an accidental kayaking event with his younger sister. He was the eldest of their eight children.

If your sister were in the water thirty yards away and you knew you were a strong swimmer, would you stop to think about what you were not wearing?
