On the afternoon of July 6, 2017, Xu Qiankai was moving a train through Rongchang railway station in Chongqing, China. He was 29 years old and had worked in the railway system since 2008, after leaving the army.
The job was routine. He was shunting a train toward the depot, a maneuver he had done many times before.
A 68-year-old woman named Cai stepped onto the tracks ahead of the train. The area was marked with no trespassing signs. Cai was hard of hearing and did not react to the horn.
Xu pulled the emergency brake and sounded the horn again. The train was still moving. Cai stood roughly ten meters ahead of it and did not move.
At that distance, the train could not stop in time.

Xu jumped from the moving train and ran toward her.
He reached Cai and pushed her clear of the tracks. His own right leg did not clear the train in time. It was crushed beneath the wheels.
Cai suffered only minor bruising. Xu was taken to the hospital, where doctors amputated his right leg below the knee because of the severity of the injury.
The railway bureau covered his medical bills. Local officials later said his job and living situation would be protected once he recovered.
Cai and her family visited Xu in the hospital to thank him in person.
Asked afterward if he would do it again, Xu said he would. He told reporters it was not something he thought about, that helping someone in danger was instinct.
He said he lost his leg but saved a life, and that he was content with the trade.
The decision took place in the space of a few seconds, the distance between a train and a woman who could not hear it coming. There was no time to calculate what the choice would cost him personally. He made it anyway, and the bill came due immediately.
Rongchang station kept his job open. Xu returned to railway work after his recovery, on a prosthetic leg.
There is a version of this story where Xu stays in his seat, sounds the horn, and lets the outcome be whatever it was going to be. No one would have known his name. Nobody would have asked him to explain a decision he did not make.
He chose the other version. It cost him a piece of his body for the rest of his life.
Men spend a lot of time thinking about what they are building and what they would protect if the moment ever asked it of them. Few are ever asked to put a literal price on it inside of five seconds.
Xu Qiankai was, and he paid it without appearing to hesitate.
