The Tejasvi River in Kannur, Kerala, was moving fast enough on August 1, 2026, to take a grown man off his feet. Floodwater had turned it the color of wet clay.

Rajesh, a swimmer from Thiruvananthapuram, had spent fifteen years responding to water emergencies across the state. During the 2018 Kerala floods he took part in a rescue effort credited with saving 114 lives. In 2024 he worked search operations after the Wayanad landslides.

That Saturday he was working at a river rafting outfit along the Tejasvi when heavy rain pushed the river over its banks. Villagers were stranded on low ground faster than emergency crews could reach them.

Rajesh used ropes to swim the current, bringing stranded people back to solid ground one at a time. By the time a man called out from a low-lying island in the middle of the river, Rajesh had already pulled about a dozen people to safety.

He swam out to the man along the rope line. The man could not swim. Rajesh could.

Before starting back, Rajesh took off his own life jacket and put it on the man.

The two of them worked their way back along the rope, the man wearing the jacket, Rajesh without one. A sudden surge of water, believed to have come from a landslide upstream, hit the line. It swept Rajesh away.

The man reached the shore. Rajesh did not surface.

Search teams looked for him over the following days while the water stayed high. His body was found on Tuesday, August 4, on the same island where he had made his last rescue, after the floodwater dropped enough to reach it.

He left behind his wife, Lakshmi, and their children. The family had taken out loans to build their home. Lakshmi had not worked outside the home, and relatives said she had no clear way to repay what they owed.

Fifteen years of pulling other people out of water did not leave Rajesh with a plan for what his own family would need if he did not come back.
