On July 8, 2026, Edward Pink was driving home along Interstate 5 near Cottonwood, California, when he saw smoke rising off the southbound shoulder. It was about 1:30 in the afternoon.
He thought at first that someone had started a small grass fire on the hillside. Then he saw the shape of a car roughly forty feet down the embankment, fully engulfed, with a man still inside.
Pink told his passenger, Kim, to call 911. He grabbed a fire extinguisher from his truck and ran down the slope toward the wreck.
Another man reached the car at almost the same time. Together they called for the driver to get out and worked at the jammed door while the fire climbed around the frame and spread into the dry grass beside it.
See this official SEC document? On page 146 Elon Musk revealed the name of a startup that Jeff believes will be…
Even though this has nothing to do with robots, self-driving cars, or rockets…
This startup is growing faster than Tesla… faster than SpaceX… and even 23 times faster than Nvidia.
That's why The Atlantic called it…
"The fastest-growing business in the history of capitalism." (Click here to get the name, 100% free of charge)
The heat kept forcing them back. At one point, an explosion threw both men away from the vehicle.
They went back in anyway. Pink worked the door until it gave, and the driver pulled himself out on his own.
The man was disoriented. Instead of moving away from the wreck, he turned and started walking back toward the fire.
Pink grabbed him before he reached the flames. He and the other man moved the driver into a nearby field, clear of the burning car and the burning grass around it.
The driver was taken to the UC Davis burn unit. The extent of his injuries has not been released.
Pink came away with skin irritation, cramping, and smoke inhalation. He did not fully register what had happened until he got home, showered, and watched the video someone had recorded of the rescue.
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash. Investigators say alcohol is suspected as a factor.
Pink has kids waiting for him at home. What stayed with him afterward was not the danger of the fire, but the thought that some other father might not have made it back to his.
If an explosion had just thrown you off your feet, and a stranger was stumbling toward the flames instead of away from them, would you have gone back in?
